My Windows Server 2008 TS Session

Folks,

Yesterday I have a session of Terminal Services in Server Wave 2008 Launch. The event was very cool with approx 10.000 participants. I only have 20 minutes presentation but I showed a couple of demos that hopefully will open our eyes about what we can do in Windows Server 2008 especially Terminal Services. This is what I presented yesterday:

1.      Presentation Virtualization Technologies

a.       Why Remote App

b.      The Architecture

2.      How it works in 2008?

a.       StepByStep Deploying TS Remote Application

3.      Prerequisite

a.       RDP 6.0 and RDP 6.1 Comparison (Data Sheet Provided)

4.      Application Distribution

a.       Distribution Application Scenario with MSI

b.      Distribution Application Scenario RDP Package

5.      Web Access Extensibility (5)

a.       TS Web Access with Silverlight

b.      TS Web Access in Windows SharePoint Services

6.      Interoperability

a.       Accessing TS RemoteApp with Ubuntu 7.10

b.      Accessing TS RemoteApp with Mac OS X

c.       TS Web Access with Silverlight UI and Video Streaming

7.      Device Redirection (2)

a.       Controlling Robot with Remote App and Windows Mobile

I will publish and upload the video of the demo as soon as possible. Here is a couple of pictures that taken at that moment.

You can see I bring a robot and use 3 laptops (Vista SP1, Ubuntu 7.10, and MacBook) + a Windows Server 2008.

Thanks for the info, I've been doing some testing with Server 2008 and Mac with RDC 2 Beta; trying to get RemoteAPP working on the Mac, but it's not working.

Can you tell me how you can open a RemoteApp on Mac OS X?

4TOM:

You have to create the RDP file with TSX Client and put the shell name at the “Start following program” textbox. You can get the shell name from the alias name of RDP with this simple app. Then save that RPD file on your Mac and double click using RDP Client for Mac. I’ll put the webcast about this later on my blog.

Please upload the demo for us, so we can see how to use TS RemoteApp with OSX/Ubuntu. I tried to follow your answer to Tom, but I don't understand. What is TSX Client? When you say it works with OSX/Ubuntu, do you mean RemoteApp works, or Remote Desktop? The official line is that RDC2 for MAC will not 'support' RemoteApp. Does this mean that it's not 'supported', or won't ever work? Please update us, as currently, Google only finds this page detailing RemoteApp working with non-windows OS's.

Do you have the video available, or the slide that shows the RDP 6.0 vs RDP 6.1?

I was very intrigued by the comments about getting TS RemoteApp working with Mac OS.  Based on the March 14 post above, I have come up with the following presumptions:

I believe Narenda Wicaksono was referring to the TSclientX.

I don't really think it gives any advantages in this process over Microsoft's released RDC for Mac v2.

I believe he was saying that you can open the RDP file created on the TS RemoteApp server with TSclientX and see the "alias" name for the RemoteApp under the Programs tab.

In my test with calculator, the alias was "||calc".

I was unable to get any Mac app to have the "seamless" experience with he launched application.  This process only gives access to the RemoteApp via the alias:

Save the RDP file from the TS RemoteApp server

Open the RDP file with TSclientX (launches program)

If you open the RDP file with Microsoft RDC 2, you need to cancel the "enter credentials" prompt, choose preferences, select the checkbox under applications for "start only the following...", close preferences, and then connect.

If you have access to the TS RemoteApp server, you can see the alias in the TS RemoteApp manager and create your own Mac-specific RDP file with the RDC v2 application by putting "||" followed by the alias name in the Application Path and File Name field under Applications (as well as checking the "start" checkbox).

I hope this helps others that come across this page.
