  • Behind the Scene - The First Windows 2008 Hyper-V RTM, IIS 7 and SQL 2008 RTM live on Web-EN

After Naren tease all of us with his blogs about the first Windows 2008 RTM, IIS 7 and SQL 2008 in the world (well, we claim it first, so...), i decided to put more teaser about it by disclosing a bit about what we actually did in this migration.

This activity actually started about 3 months ago, where Gulver, a team of select individuals from Indonesian Geek Brigade comprises of myself, naren and MVP raymond were called to action. This time the mission is to migrate our aging community server and leap frog it to present time. This mission is quite compleks since the server uses ancient technology such as IIS 6 and run on top of Windows 2003. We were asked to migrate it to the newest platform such as Windows 2008 (at that time hyper-V was still RC) and off course, IIS7. This task is more challenging since most of our community's website were using Community Server 2007, which at that time, no one said it is capable of running on top of IIS 7/windows 2008.

To ensure successful migration, we visited the server room several times in order to obtain data so we can do an offline research (geek speak for bashing it out) to map out the necessary steps for migration. Shown below were me and Naren at the crime scene. Fellow MVP Raymon was the one taking the picture :)

After obtaining the data, we proceed to perform the testing at one of our secret test lab (location top secret). Shown here is where our new hardware IBM X3200 being setup for testing.

To cut the story short, the entire website were successfully migrated to the new platform, but why take our word for it? you can do a simple task by performing nslookup on one of the website, say wss-id.org. The result will show the new public ip 202.155.61.90

Open up a web browser and enter the page, you will see a soon to be familiar welcome message from IIS 7 as shown below

So, is that it? of course not Stay tune for more behind the scene stories which will discuss in the details the steps taken for the migration, exclusive from the Gulver Team, cheers
